虹是由于日光照射在含有大量雨滴的空气(或云)中,由于雨滴对阳光折射而形成的.当太阳视角度很低时,而照射角度却比较高,所以虹也比较高,有时可以出现在天顶附近,这样就成了虹高日头低的现象.出现这种现象说明空气中有对流比较旺盛的云彩,如积雨云它可以伸展到很高的位置,当阳光照射到云上时也可能出现虹.
另一方面也说明在高层空气中雨滴较大,含量较多,因此在较高位置才能出现虹.两种情况都说明本地区处在不稳定的天气系统控制下,并且水汽比较充沛,未来形势继续发展,就很可能出现阴雨天气,预示未来可能下雨.
